We can't be friends

“We Can’t Be Friends” is for anyone who’s ever tried to turn a real love into a harmless friendship; and realized too late that it doesn’t work when the feelings are still alive.

This song comes from that brutal middle space after a breakup: the relationship is over, but the heart hasn’t caught up yet. The other person wants to stay close, stay kind, stay familiar. But every hug, every late-night conversation, every casual check-in feels like touching a bruise that never had time to heal.

That’s why I wrote this song. Not because I wanted to be cruel, but because sometimes the kindest thing you can do for yourself is admit the truth: "I can’t keep you in my life in a smaller role when I loved you in such a big one."

At its core, “We Can’t Be Friends” is about self-preservation. It’s about refusing to keep bleeding just because the ending wasn’t loud enough to look like a clean break.

If you’ve ever had to choose distance over false comfort, this song will probably feel familiar.
